The Lake Hopatcong Commission meeting is always the best place to find out what is happening with our treasured lake.

The next meeting by Zoom Webinar is on June 14, 2021, at 7:00 PM (requires registration) and would be a great opportunity to learn more important information on the Summer of 2021.

Status of Weed Harvesting in 2021:

This month’s meeting may be one of the most important of the year, as we are going to learn more about the Commissions efforts on the Weed Harvesting for 2021, as the project is currently stalled due to NJ DEP issues due to legal issues (accident on Lake Hopatcong), and no independent contractors willing to bid on Harvesting weeds using the lake’s equipment.

The Harvesting contract has been sent out for bid twice, both in State and out of State, and the Commission has not received a single bid. At this point, the Commission is exploring other options to try and ensure the lake is maintained for 2021.

The lack of bids is primarily due to this being such a specialized industry, with current vendors already fully committed to current projects.

While the Commission has been working hard on a final solution, they left the last meeting with no resolution on the weed harvesting for this year as they seek alternative solutions.

Status of HABs in 2021:

Princeton Hydro is also expected to update the Commission on the most recent test results on HABs, which provides an early indicator of what this year holds for the lake. In past lectures on the subject, we understand that several criteria help HABs grow.

Heavy rains, followed by periods of sunny and hot weather, create the conditions for algae outbreaks – especially when stormwater, soil erosion, and sewage spills carry phosphorus-laden water over parking lots or sidewalks where the water cannot be absorbed into the ground. Additionally, still water helps format the HABs.

While the start of the 2021 boating season has been a mixture of different weather patterns, from hot to cold, and some heavy rainfalls, it is going to be interesting to hear the report on where we stand for 2021.
