ROXBURY, NJ (June 6, 2019) – Jefferson Elementary School in Roxbury Township was recently selected to receive a grant from Siemens to purchase LEGO® Education sets to be used in the school’s Makerspace along with professional training on how to use them.
This was all due thanks to the efforts of Jefferson’s Media Specialist Katey McAuliffe and Jefferson parent and Siemens employee, Elizabeth Morales.
In an email to McAuliffe, Christine Baumann from the Siemens Corporation stated, “Siemens is a global technology powerhouse that has stood for engineering excellence, innovation, quality, reliability and internationality for 170 years. We are also a firm believer in the advancement of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and bringing educational opportunities into our communities that create lasting value.”
Adding, “As part of this commitment, Siemens is awarding more than $100,000 worth of LEGO® Education sets and professional training to 30 K-8 schools in the U.S. and your school has been selected from more than 150 submitted by Siemens employees. Siemens – and the employee who nominated your school, Elizabeth Morales – believe the LEGO® Education sets will further enable your school to provide students the opportunity to develop 21st Century skills and become lifelong learners.”
The LEGO® Education sets are an educational tool specifically designed for creative classroom learning that provides hands-on experiences that stimulate communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. Jefferson School received eight WeDo 2.0 Core sets while McAuliffe and Morales attended professional training by a LEGO® Master Trainer on May 8th.
“These LEGO® Education sets are a wonderful and fun opportunity for young learners to explore STEM concepts in a new and exciting way,” said Barbara Humpton, CEO of Siemens USA. “At Siemens, we believe that giving students the opportunity to explore STEM at an early age with engaging, hands-on programs like this one can help spark a life-long interest in these important fields.”
Jefferson Principal Melissa Cosgrove shared, “We are so excited to be receiving these materials for the students to work with in our Makerspace!”
