Offshore powerboat racing is back again this Sunday on Lake Hopatcong. This time, it plays host to the 2019 National Championship race, where the drivers will go all out to win the last race before the championships.
Play VideoHopatcong Lake Regional News had the opportunity on Saturday to visit the race pits to talk to the drivers about the upcoming event. Watch the video coverage to see why this is a must attend event regardless of the weather.
In 2019 they are expecting 10 or more race classes, which will be made up of 40+ boats. All of them will be competing in this Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) event, which runs out of the prestigious Lake Forest Yacht Club (LFYC), otherwise known as Race Village.
Lake Hopatcong local resident & racer, Jay Muller, will headline in two of the most popular race boats on the OPA circuit. Jay will be throttleman for last year’s crowd favorite, the Batman Boat, and is scheduled to drive for the famous Miss Geico boat. As an added bonus, Jay will also be racing his own team Wicked boat with his son Jason.
SUN, OCT 27,12:00 PM: Sunday is RACE DAY!!! The course is an intricate 2.3-mile run, including a dogleg on the back straight away, which will certainly keep things exciting for the racers as well as the fans. This stadium style course was quickly nicknamed the “Bristol Motor Speedway of the Water” by the racers. The course is surrounded by land, which provides optimal viewing areas nearly everywhere along the course, making this a “can’t miss” event for the fans and racers alike.
There will be an entry fee to enter into the Race Village at the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club for Sunday Only. The entry fee on Sunday will be $5.00 for adults. Kids and LFYC Members (with their badge present) are free.
The OPA, event promoters, race teams, and all of the sponsors hope you enjoy this truly amazing and one-of-a-kind offshore powerboat racing event. It’s a great time for all ages to enjoy a terrific weekend at Lake Hopatcong.
