The Lake Hopatcong Foundation was selected to receive an incubation grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH) to conduct a front-end evaluation survey to assist us with determining what type of programming will be of most interest to the community as we prepare for the opening of the Lake Hopatcong Cultural and Environmental Center.

The Lake Hopatcong Foundation has been working to improve the Lake Hopatcong region through programs and initiatives focused on the environment, education, community, historical preservation, recreation as well as arts and culture.  One of our major initiatives has been the restoration of the historical Lake Hopatcong Train Station in Landing for use as our offices as well as the Lake Hopatcong Cultural & Environmental Center. Our vision for the station is to promote the cultural, historical and natural value of the region’s long past and the history and development of the transportation advancements that influenced how the region developed, while also providing a center that can accommodate cultural events, community gatherings, and educational programs.  We will be using this incubation grant from NJCH to conduct an evaluation study to learn what types of programming are appealing and will best serve the needs of the community.

Lake Hopatcong Train Station“The New Jersey Council for the Humanities offers the Incubation Grant program to support programs that are in development,” said Director of Grants and Programs Gigi Naglak. “Public humanities programs explore a significant question about our shared history, values, culture, and beliefs. The nine grantee organizations will be able to research, plan, explore, or pilot a program that address these important questions.”

“Understanding the needs and interests of our community will enable the foundation to provide appealing programming at our new center when we relocate there later this year. We are thrilled to be selected by the NJHC for an incubation grant to solicit community input through an online survey,” said LHF Acting Executive Director Donna Macalle-Holly.

More About the Incubation Grant

The New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH) recently awarded $43,758 in Incubation Grant funding to nine organizations. Incubation Grants help organizations plan, research, prototype, and experiment for public humanities opportunities. From preliminary content research to launching a pilot program, funding is used for audience-focused program development.

Public humanities programming allows individuals to share in the exploration of history, values, culture, and beliefs. NJCH supports and acts as a resource for cultural and service-oriented nonprofit partners as they bring public humanities experiences to the citizens of New Jersey, harnessing the power of the humanities to strengthen communities.
