Vandalism on Trail Highlights Need for Trail Maintenance Volunteers

The Lake Hopatcong Foundation has received lots of great feedback from community members who have been hiking and enjoying the new Lake Hopatcong Trail. The first leg of the planned 40-mile trail stretches approximately 9 miles through the Borough of Hopatcong and was officially opened in September.

Unfortunately, along with all of the positive feedback, we have also encountered some vandalism along the trail.  Theft of signs, destruction and removal of blazes and dumping along the trail all highlight the need for a good team of trail maintenance volunteers to help us keep the trail clear and safe.

If you encounter any issues while hiking on the trail, please contact our office at 973-663-2500 or

If you would like to adopt a section of the trail to maintain, please see the trail sections and map below and contact to add your name to the list.  Trail maintainers are asked to hike their adopted stretch, do some basic trail maintenance and report their findings to the Foundation twice a year.  All trail maintainers will be provided with a trail maintenance guide and trail report forms.  It’s simple to do!  Thank you to all who have been out hiking and maintaining this wonderful community asset.
