On November 12, 2018, the scouts in Hopatcong Girl Scout Troop 94072 were awarded their Silver Award. The Silver Award is the second highest honor in Girl Scouting.

Girl Scout Seniors Katie Maitland, Sophia Roberts, Chloe O’Mahoney, and Sara Nuccio decided to focus their project on childhood literacy by making audio books for Hudson Maxim, Tulsa Trail and Durban Ave schools. They recalled how they enjoyed using books on tape were when they were younger and how that experience helped them learn to read. They realized that current students do not have those types of audiobooks.

They wanted to provide audiobooks to our younger students and our special needs students. The scouts held book drives and collected books from the community. They read and recorded over 100 books in digital form, uploading them onto flash drives for easy use within classrooms.

Then the books were sorted by reading level and packaged. In September, the audiobooks were delivered to all three schools. They presented the books to the staff at Hudson Maxim, Mrs. Kovach at Tulsa Trail and Mrs. Bauer at Durban Ave. The troop also donated audiobooks to Byram Elementary School.

The girls worked on their project for a year and totaled over 160 service hours. They were very happy to be able to contribute to their school community that helped them learn so much.
