Sixth Annual Jefferson Basketball Association Coaches Charity Game
The sixth annual Jefferson Basketball Association (JBA) Coaches Charity Game takes place on Saturday, March 23, in the high school Freedom Gym (1010 Weldon Road).
The doors open at 6 and the game starts at 7. Admission donations are $5 for adults and $3 for students, with additional donations welcome. Activities include a 3-point competition ($5), half court shot ($5), and tricky tray. Kids can participate in shooting games. Items donated by local clubs and businesses, such as free camp registrations, will be raffled. The event also offers a full snack bar.
The Coaches Charity Game is played by JBA coaches and board members who volunteer with the 600-plus children in the league. This special event offers an opportunity to switch roles: The adults get out on the court and have some fun while their players watch.
The JBA is headed by Jim Small, president, and a board of 16 volunteers. The Coaches Charity Game was initiated in 2013 as a fundraiser for a local family whose husband/father passed away unexpectedly. Other recipients include a local girl with serious medical issues, community food pantries, the Department for Persons with Disabilities, a Jefferson teacher who lost her home in a fire, and the Jefferson Challenger League.
All proceeds of the 2019 game will be given to the Cuervo family in memory of Jay Cuervo, who passed away in October 2018. He generously gave many years of volunteer coaching and other service to township youth through sports programs. The JBA is honored to support his family, as he supported many children in the community by donating his time.
